mIRC es el cliente IRC para Windows más popular. Fue uno de los primeros en nacer y, con el paso de los años, ha ido adquiriendo nuevas características. No obstante, las funciones básicas siguen siendo las mismas; el protocolo IRC, de hecho, apenas ha cambiado.
Una vez que hayas instalado y ejecutado mIRC, introduce tus detalles en la pantalla de configuración y conecta a uno de los muchísimos servidores existentes. En español, el más recomendable es IRC-Hispano. Escribe /server irc.irc-hispano.org en la ventana Status (ésa en la que verás los mensajes de servicio) y dale a Intro para conectar.
La peculiaridad de IRC es su sistema de comandos. No supone ninguna molestia para los usuarios veteranos, pero, si estás acostumbrado a Messenger, te parecerá bastante raro. Por supuesto, mIRC también cuenta con menús y botones, aunque escribir /join o /msg resulta mucho más rápido que usar el ratón.
mIRC es configurable al máximo: sonidos, colores, tipografías, avisos, envío de ficheros, registros de conversaciones... todo se puede modificar desde el menú Options. Además, mIRC es ampliable mediante scripts (un ejemplo muy conocido es IRCap).
Tiene muchos años a su espalda y cada vez menos gente lo usa, pero mIRC aún perdura gracias a su indiscutible calidad. Nunca es tarde para darle una oportunidad a este clásico del chat.
